AI-based systems in educational contexts: National Educational Panel Study calls for new modules

The National Educational Panel Study calls on researchers outside the NEPS network to submit proposals for new survey modules. Proposals are wanted on the topic “AI-based systems in educational contexts: Motives for use, knowledge, trust”. The deadline for submitting a short outline is October 30, 2025.

In the current and planned survey program for the NEPS Starting Cohorts 6 (adults) and 8 (grade 5), digital competencies and ICT literacy are repeatedly surveyed using specially developed tests. In addition, the survey program contains questions on digital media use in everyday life at home, at school and at work, as well as on digital socialization and transformation. Questions on the frequency of use of AI-based systems are also planned (e.g., for creating and revising texts, translating, and understanding foreign languages, planning tasks and projects, receiving suggested solutions and feedback, creating, and editing images and for programming and creating codes).

In the future, the latter is to be supplemented by questions on (educational) motives for use and knowledge about AI systems. In addition, questions on trust in AI systems can also be submitted. In the current “Call for Modules”, quality-checked questions are now being called for. The module can contain 3 to 5 questions. Proposals may be submitted in the form of short outlines until October 30, 2025. The selection will be made in a rating process by the extended NEPS Executive Committee.

The NEPS has been collecting data on competence development and educational trajectories over the entire life course for fifteen years and has followed over 70,000 participants throughout Germany in seven starting cohorts – from early childhood to old age. With the “Call for Modules”, the NEPS survey program has been regularly open to external content since 2020
