The closing conference for the project INSIDE will take place on March 6. At the beginning of the project, more than 4,000 students with and without special educational needs were accompanied through school and beyond over the course of several years. During the project their parents, teachers, school administrators and school support staff were interviewed as well. The participants and futher interested parties are now invited to attend the closing conferece. Key results will be presented and dicussed. Registration for the online event (free of charge) is open as of now.
Over the course of around two hours, research findings on the social participation of students with and without special educational needs as well as their subject-specific and non-subject-specific competencies will be presented. The conference will also include an exchange on other topics, such as democracy education in schools and teaching, cooperation between teachers in an inclusive education system and the perception of inclusive learning from the perspective of pupils without special educational needs.
Financed by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Science, INSIDE has been collecting crucial information on an inclusive educational system since 2016.
The more than 4,000 students were monitored for five years from grade 6 onwards. School administrators, teachers and parents were also surveyed. Information was also collected on the educational trajectories of young people into the vocational training system or other life situations. This comprehensive data on the implementation and conditions for success of school inclusion in and after lower secondary level can be used as a basis for recommendations for action and political objectives to promote inclusion in everyday school life and at the transition to education and employment, as well as for scientific purposes.
In INSIDE, special attention is paid to supplementing the scientific work of the project team with expertise from school practice by experts from science, politics and associations as well as stakeholders. Dr. Angela Ehlers, Federal Chairwoman of the Association for Special Needs Education, has been secured for the final conference. She will give a keynote speech on the significance of the INSIDE study for schools and teaching.
INSIDE is a cooperative project of the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi), the Humboldt University of Berlin (HU), the University of Wuppertal (BUW) and the University of Potsdam (UP). With the data and study results obtained, INSIDE contributes to the promotion of participation and the discussion of the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Germany.
