The second Summer School of the Priority Programme 1646 "Education as a Lifelong Process. Analyzing Data of the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS)" on "Competence Development and Educational Inequalities—Theoretical Concepts and Methodological Implementations" took place from July 11–19, 2016 in cooperation with the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories. A 7-day program with varied teaching and learning formats aimed to promote young researchers by strengthening their theoretical and methodological skills in educational research. The Priority Programme is funded and initiated by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG).

In total, ten distinguished (inter)national scholars and leading experts in the field of empirical educational research and related disciplines (e.g., sociology, psychology) contributed to the Summer School by giving theoretical lectures and methodological workshops as well as discussing research papers submitted by the Summer School participants. A special focus was on assessing and analyzing competencies featuring in-depth discussions by acknowledged experts and the participants of the Summer School. During the last 2 days, a NEPS Data Workshop with a special focus on imputation and missing data was held.
