Prof. Dr. Hartmut Esser visits the NEPS

The international renowned sociologist Prof. Dr. Hartmut Esser visited the NEPS from April 11 to April 16, 2011.

During his stay, Prof. Dr. Esser designed a course of three lectures in which two different topics were discussed. The first talk "Ethnische Bildungsungleichheit" addressed different theories and empirical findings to terms of processes, outcomes and resulting inequality of education. Besides the presentation of descriptive results of different studies, Prof. Dr. Esser also showed methodological problems of surveying in this field of research. The second lecture “Bildungssysteme” followed this up. The key issue of this lecture was to which extent it is possible to compare (inter-)national educational systems and the strength of the effects of these different systems on educational outcomes of learners. In the third talk Prof. Dr. Esser showed another part of his research. In addition to established sociological models of migration, the lecture “Das Modell der intergenerationalen Integration” treated new methods in this field of research.

Besides the sociological talks of Prof. Dr. Esser during his stay, the young acadmecics of the NEPS had the possibility to discuss their own themes of research with him and get helpful hints for further research.
