He gave two presentations, titled "Becoming a Grandparent and Early Retirement in Europe" and "The Proper Age for Parenthood: Age Norms and Fertility in Europe". While both presentations were met by a full house, the topics of each presentation focused on opposite spectrums of the life course. The first presentation used micro data covering 22 countries from all regions of Europe to investigate to what extent becoming a grandparent affects early retirement in European countries. The second presentation argued that different European regions have different normative beliefs about what constitutes a "proper age for parenthood" and that the extent to which these ideals are realized has a substantial influence on the rate of second births. In addition to giving these two presentations, Prof. van Bavel met with staff and students to discuss their research.
