Prof. Blossfeld gave a short presentation about NEPS and especially focused on the aims of the study and its differences to other educational studies in Germany. Fundamental research concerning the acquisition of education and the individual developments of competencies throughout the entire life course, from early infancy to retirement age, is the main research assignment of the NEPS. The Principal Investigator pointed out that, “We are not PISA”, referring to differences in the longitudinal design of the NEPS as well as its more extensive survey program. At the same time, the connection and cooperation with established (inter)national educational studies is important and of major concern to the NEPS.
Additionally, Prof. Blossfeld gave an overview of central advancements made by NEPS within the scope of a supplementary application in 2010. These advancements include a more precise investigation of the educational and occupational careers of teacher trainees, a more systematic reflection of the educational careers of pupils at special needs schools in Germany and the processes occurring during transitional periods as well as the development of occupational competencies and their contribution to the professional careers of participants later on in life. The vivid discussion after the lecture reflected the keen interest of the guests. Prof. Blossfeld also emphasized the special significance of teachers as “essential protagonists” supporting and carrying out this voluntary study.
