LIfBi employees engaged in publishing Corona special issues of "Soziale Welt" and "Frontiers in Psychology

Two renowned journals, "Soziale Welt" and "Frontiers in Psychology", have announced special issues on the Covid-19 pandemic. In both cases, researchers from the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) are involved as editors. Abstacts can be submitted for both journals as of now.

Educational research has been quick to take up the topic of Covid-19. For example, additional surveys were already conducted in May in the National Education Panel Study (NEPS), first empirical results have already been published (see also here). In addition, several journals have now announced special issues on the Covid-19 crisis.

Soziale Welt“, a leading sociologic journal in German-speaking countries, aims filling a research gap with its special issue.  Team of editors, Prof. Dr. Corinna Kleinert (LIfBi) and Prof. Dr. Michael Gebel (Univesity of Bamberg) calls on the scientific community to submit abstacts for papers that study the consequences of the Corona crisis on social stratification and social inequalities in Germany in a longer time perspective. Especially in the first months after the lockdown in March 2020 a surge of empirical studies were launched and many results published. This kind of empirical social research has only focused on the immediate, short-term impact of the crisis on social inequality so far. Research has also been limited in data availability as many empirical studies were based on small and non-representative samples and often lacked a comparison to pre-Corona times in a longitudinal perspective.

Papers may analyze such changes/effects of the Corona crisis on social stratification and social inequalities, for example with regard to gender, social background and class, migration and ethnicity, age and cohort, or their intersections, in different life spheres and dimensions such as learning and education, employment chances, careers and working conditions, family life and social relations, social inclusion/exclusion, income, poverty and material deprivation, well-being and health. The editors are seeking theory-guided empirical contributions, based on longitudinal quantitative or qualitative microdata

Abstracts can be submitted until June 30 to bildungsforschung@lifbi.de (subject: "Abstract Special Issue Corona"). The Special Issue will be published in late autumn 2022. Further information can be found here.

“Frontiers in Psychology” is international leading peer reviewed open access journal in the field of psychology. Inspired by the May additional survey in the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) on the corona pandemic, the idea arosed to provide the publications on this NEPS data with a good platform additionally to LIfBi's own publication activities.

In order to get a special edition in the specialist journal, the four LIfBi scientists Timo Gnambs, Sina Fackler, Karin Gehrer and Kathrin Lockl networked with international colleagues who are themselves involved in research on the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences in the education system, thus putting together an interesting pool of contributors from different countries.

The editors are now calling on researchers to submit contributions on this current topic. Contributions are not restricted to specific age groups, learning settings, cultural regions, or methodological approaches. Possible questions can, for example, address the perception of the new learning environments and conditions, the impact on teacher-student interaction, aspects of socio-emotional development or family coping with changes in family life, work and learning during the pandemic. Also conceivable are contributions that address methodological challenges in researching learning and educational processes during the pandemic. Of course, contributions on issues not explicitly mentioned here are also welcome!

Abstracts can be submitted until November 30, 2020, the deadline for manuscripts is April 29, 2021. Further information, deadlines and references to formal criteria and financing options can be found at the website of the special issue with “Frontiers in Psychology”.
