From East Germany to the Ruhr region: How social segregation shapes German cities (differently)
Prof. Dr. Marcel Helbig (Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories) has investigated how unequally poverty, wealth, education and ethnicity are distributed in German cities by combining various official data sets. This makes specific comparisons of 153 cities in Germany possible for the first time. In the interview on his study "Behind the Facades", the sociologist describes the cities in which segregation has increased or decreased, how child and old-age poverty have developed and where there are regional differences in the polarization of poverty. Helbig also explains why a tight housing market can reduce social segregation in cities.
