The National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) in conversation with young people with migration background

The National Educational Panel Study presented itself within the context of the VorbilderAkademie. This academy was initiated and funded by the Zentrum für Bildung und Begabung (~ Center for Education and Gifted Talent) which is a center for talents promotion. The VorbilderAkademie comprised a one-week holiday program for talented young people with migration background during which the pupils from grade 9 to 11 could inform themselves about study subjects and job opportunities. They also had the possibility to discover and develop their talents in one of the workshops offered.

In the context of the VorbilderAkademie, Melanie Olczyk, staff member of the research group “Education Acquisition with Migration Background in the Life Course”, provided the young people an insight into the NEPS, its aims, structure and study design. The participants showed particular interest in migration specific aspects. The young persons not only got an overview of the theoretical factors used to explain ethnic educational inequality but also how these factors are measured within NEPS. They were able to look into different topics and took advantage of the opportunity to ask detailed questions. In this connection, information was also given about scientific work, related tasks and the occupational profile of a “researcher”.
